WhatsApp allows communication between different devices

For those still unfamiliar with WhatsApp, its a mobile messenger that automatically scans your phonebook for people who are already on it and lists them when you open it. I was surprised to see at least 20% of my contacts already using WhatsApp when I installed and ran it for the first time. WhatsApp requires you to be on the internet for it to work…you can not only sent messages on WhatsApp but also send files attachments. I have shared quite a few pictures seamlessly through it.

The best part of WhatsApp is that its available for every mobile platform – Android, iPhone, Symbian, Windows mobile etc. The downside? Its free only for the first year.

In comes Facebook Messenger

In a blog post yesterday, Facebook announced new features and improvements to its mobile application Facebook Messenger. The new update allows users to see who is online, who’s on mobile and when the other person is typing.

New support has been added for 22 new languages on Android, and 12 new languages on iOS. Facebook Messenger is already available on iPhone (including iOS5) and Android, and now it’s available on BlackBerry. Beluga, the system behind Facebook Messenger, was supposed to be the BlackBerry Messenger for non-BlackBerries. In an ironic twist of fate, that system has made its way to BlackBerry through Facebook.

White iphone 4 release date

From June 2010 to April 28, 2011? According to macstories.net, the huge delay has been caused:

…due to alleged production issues with the white paint, which — according to many — caused problems with the camera lens, as well as light leaking from the front panel. The final version of the white iPhone, as reported last week, introduces a redesigned proximity sensor that has a different shape and doesn’t sport the grille of small holes seen in Steve Jobs’ on-stage demo last year.

In short,  there were much more challenges than Apple’s designers had anticipated. Steve Jobs sees the whole thing as a learning process. It has benefited the company more broadly. “We obviously think about this in a generic way because you have a white iPad,” he said.

Meanwhile, even as people in the United States are waiting with great anticipation for the white iphone, retailers in Belgium and Italy have been found selling these to their customers a day before the release date set by Apple, i.e. April 28, 2011.

According to this press release from Apple – White models of iPhone 4 will be available in Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Macau, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, UK and the US, beginning Thursday, April 28 and in many more countries around the world soon.

The white iPhone 4 ships with iOS 4.3.1 (build 8G4), released in late March for the GSM iPhone 4. And thats almost about it. There are no hardware changes in the white iphone when compared with its black cousin. Even the death grip network problem stays with the white iphone 4!

The game can be downloaded for free from the itunes website and can be installed and played on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. For the iphone, it requires OS 3.1.2 or later. Game size is 20.6MB.

Nokia showed off the Nokia Tube in a presentation slide noticed by Infoworld at a software development conference in California Monday. The Tube, like the iPhone, is a touch-screen phone that can be manipulated using your fingers, and is Nokia’s “first touch device.”

More details about the development have surfaced, days after its existence leaked out at a developer conference. Here’s a rare first look at Nokia’s cool device:

The “Tube” will arrive in the second half of this year, according to Symbian Freak. A Nokia spokesman confirmed the timing to Computerworld but didn’t offer any further details other than the obvious notion that the “Tube” will use Symbian’s S60 operating system. Nokia owns a large stake in Symbian.

According to Symbian Freak, the Tube (real name TBD) will come with:

- 3G,

- Wi-Fi

- GPS chips

- a screen sized between 3 inches and 3.5 inches (similar to Nokia N 73 but wider)

- built-in camera that can also support geotagging of photos

The company sold 3.7 million iPhones in 2007, and there was a noticeable gap between the number of units sold and those that were activated by providers in the U.S. and Europe that Apple holds exclusive deals with.

Despite Apple’s attempts to keep iPhone unlocking under wraps with new software and changes to the iPhone’s bootloader, enterprising entrepreneurs are apparently giving the people what they want. This is a bit of an opportunity lost for Apple, since the company has signed lucrative revenue-sharing deals with its carrier partners that don’t apply if an iPhone is unlocked from its respective network.

At least it does highlight the demand for the iPhone among China’s massive population. In-Stat said that Chinese consumers want smartphones with multimedia features and Web browsing, and the iPhone fills that need nicely. Apparently, they are willing to pay for it: 20 percent of smartphones sold in China last year went for $533 or more.

Apple’s talk breakdown with China Mobile was downplayed by CEO Steve Jobs, who claims there was only ever really one meeting. The iPhone is poised to make its Asian debut in 2008.
