Apple CEO Tim Cook introduces the new iPad: But the '4G' device is built on technology that is not available in many countries

Chief Executive Tim Cook, presiding over his second major product launch after debuting with 2011′s voice-enabled iPhone 4S, introduced the highly anticipated third iteration of the tablet.

But he stumped many in the audience by breaking away from the tradition of calling the third-generation tablet the iPad 3, as some had expected, referring to it simply as the “new iPad.”

Wall Street had anticipated many of the features Cook showed off on Wednesday, including a higher-definition “retina display” screen – containing several times as many pixels within the same area – and a better camera.

Also launched during the event was Apple’s new Apple TV set-top box, which offers full HD films, television and web channels such as YouTube. The device offers built-in access to Apple’s iCloud offering users online access to films they have purchased on other apple devices such as iPhone.

Apple announced that films and TV shows in iTunes store would now be available in 1080p, or full high-definition.

The company also revealed a new, cheaper ‘entry level’ iPad 2 for $399 – cheaper than any previous model. Mr Cook also left the door open for ‘a lot more’ innovation in the next year – possibly a reference to the new iPhone 5 widely expected to launch later in 2012.

The new iPad and Apple TV devices will be available on store shelves on March 16 in the US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia. They are already available for pre-order in the local Apple websites.

The final version of the white iPhone, as reported last week, introduces a redesigned proximity sensor that has a different shape and doesn’t sport the grille of small holes seen in Steve Jobs’ on-stage demo last year.

In short,  there were much more challenges than Apple’s designers had anticipated. Steve Jobs sees the whole thing as a learning process. It has benefited the company more broadly. “We obviously think about this in a generic way because you have a white iPad,” he said.

Meanwhile, even as people in the United States are waiting with great anticipation for the white iphone, retailers in Belgium and Italy have been found selling these to their customers a day before the release date set by Apple, i.e. April 28, 2011.

The iPhone 4 uses Apple’s A4 CPU, the same processor powering the Apple iPad. And it runs the newly renamed iOS 4 operating system (which the iPad will also use, starting in the fall).

The phone will roll out on June 24 in the USA, priced at $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model (in white or black).

Nokia showed off the Nokia Tube in a presentation slide noticed by Infoworld at a software development conference in California Monday. The Tube, like the iPhone, is a touch-screen phone that can be manipulated using your fingers, and is Nokia’s “first touch device.”

More details about the development have surfaced, days after its existence leaked out at a developer conference. Here’s a rare first look at Nokia’s cool device:

The “Tube” will arrive in the second half of this year, according to Symbian Freak. A Nokia spokesman confirmed the timing to Computerworld but didn’t offer any further details other than the obvious notion that the “Tube” will use Symbian’s S60 operating system. Nokia owns a large stake in Symbian.

According to Symbian Freak, the Tube (real name TBD) will come with:

- 3G,

- Wi-Fi

- GPS chips

- a screen sized between 3 inches and 3.5 inches (similar to Nokia N 73 but wider)

- built-in camera that can also support geotagging of photos

The company sold 3.7 million iPhones in 2007, and there was a noticeable gap between the number of units sold and those that were activated by providers in the U.S. and Europe that Apple holds exclusive deals with.

Despite Apple’s attempts to keep iPhone unlocking under wraps with new software and changes to the iPhone’s bootloader, enterprising entrepreneurs are apparently giving the people what they want. This is a bit of an opportunity lost for Apple, since the company has signed lucrative revenue-sharing deals with its carrier partners that don’t apply if an iPhone is unlocked from its respective network.

At least it does highlight the demand for the iPhone among China’s massive population. In-Stat said that Chinese consumers want smartphones with multimedia features and Web browsing, and the iPhone fills that need nicely. Apparently, they are willing to pay for it: 20 percent of smartphones sold in China last year went for $533 or more.

Apple’s talk breakdown with China Mobile was downplayed by CEO Steve Jobs, who claims there was only ever really one meeting. The iPhone is poised to make its Asian debut in 2008.
