Rio de Janeiro is the city that has beaten Madrid and Chicago to host the 2016 Olympic games, announced just 5 minutes ago in Copenhagen.
Jubilant scenes were witnessed in the coastal town of Rio as hundreds of thousands followed the proceedings live on television. Just before the announcement, the olympic anthem was played and all olympic delegates from across the world stood up to pay their respects for the word’s greatest sporting event.
“I honestly believe it is Brazil’s time,” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told the IOC voters. “For the others it will be just one more Games. For us it will be an unparalleled opportunity.”
Chicago was considered a frontrunner along with Rio coming into the vote. But, despite President Obama’s participation in Friday’s final presentation and Michelle Obama lobbying IOC members here the last three days for her hometown, the Second City suffered a stunning first-round exit.
The result was not unexpected once Madrid and Rio de Janeiro made it to the finals. Since another European city – London – is already set to host the 2012 Olympics, there was quite a good possibility of Brazil bagging the rights.
